What is depression?

Depression is a common mental health problem that causes people to experience low mood, low self-worth, disturbed sleep, poor concentration in class as well as low energy.

What are the causes of depression?

Depression is a complex condition and its causes have not been fully understood. However, there are various contributing factors that may lead to depression.

They include: biological factors like family history which we refer to as genetics, psychological or mental factors and social factors like life-changing events like separation or divorce, life-threatening illness like cancer.

Depression symptoms may vary among people but they generally have feelings of sadness, hopelessness and helplessness. They include:

  1. Loss of energy
  2. Difficulty concentrating in class
  3. Avoiding other people, even close friends
  4. Loss of appetite
  5. Thinking about suicide and death

How do you cope with depression?

  • Going for therapy
  • Medication
  • Support groups- talking to others who have coped with depression can help
