What is self-awareness?
Self-awareness is having a clear view of your strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions.
What are the four elements that contribute to self-awareness?
- Self-image- how one views oneself
- Self-esteem- the value one puts on him/herself in terms of virtues, characteristics and beliefs
- Body-image- how one views his/her body
- Ideal-self –where the individual envisions or wants to be
What are the two types of self-awareness?
- Public self-awareness is when the individual is aware of how he or she appears to others. This self-awareness emerges when the individual is conducting a presentation or even talking or relating with a group of people such as friends, classmates, school mates, teachers among others.
- Private self-awareness is when the individual is aware of some aspects of self in a private way. Example is when looking at oneself on the mirror. The individual manages to share private things about self with close friends. The information is not in the public but among a few close people.
Why is it important to be self-aware?
- It helps one to understand his or her strengths and weaknesses
- It helps one to embrace his or her unique qualities
- It boosts self-confidence
- It helps lessen unhealthy competition
- It is the first step in maximizing ones potential
